As part of my PhD I have the privilege of attending courses on all manner of interesting projects. At the moment I am in Stockholm attending GBIF's Bioinformatics Course organized by Kevin Holston. Yesterday Rod Page gave us an introduction to some of the issues he's been grappling with, and ideas he's been trying to develop. But he started out his lecture imploring us (as the course participants) to start blogging about our work. I was inspired. So, here goes...
I will start by giving feed-back on the content of this course, and hopefully continue to blog over the next months.

About Me
- Michelle Greve
- I am a PhD student in the Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity Group at Aarhus University in Denmark. I grew up in South Africa, which provided ample opportunities for developing an interest in the natural environment. After school I therefore went on to study ecology at Stellenbosch University. When I had completed my undergraduate training, I joined Prof. Steven Chown's research group. It was here that I developed a passion for biogeography. I first did a project on the distribution patterns of organisms across Southern Ocean Islands, with a focus on nestedness patterns. Subsequently, for my Masters project, I shifted to working on body size patterns of birds across South Africa, and also compared bird assemblages in natural and agricultural landscapes. I am currently based at Aarhus University in Denmark, where I am doing a PhD on the relationship between the environment and vegetation patterns in Africa under the supervision of Jens-Christian Svenning and Anne Mette Lykke. The project is mainly bioinformatic in nature and, coming from a biological background, I find myself constantly challenged to learn new methods and approaches for analyzing my data.
