...literally and figuratively. I handed in my 99-page half-way report this afternoon. It was a good exercise in reflecting on what I had done in the last 17 months of my PhD, and where I'm going the last 19. I realize that I have learnt many skills since my start here and that I have gained much from the courses and experience of my colleagues. On the other hand, I also feel like I haven't managed as much as what I'd hoped to have done by now, and I hope to be able to make up for some of that at least in part in the next part of my PhD.
However, for now I'm exhausted and looking forward to not getting home from work at 11pm every night, and, in the not-so-distant future, a holiday in (hopefully) sunny South Africa.

About Me
- Michelle Greve
- I am a PhD student in the Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity Group at Aarhus University in Denmark. I grew up in South Africa, which provided ample opportunities for developing an interest in the natural environment. After school I therefore went on to study ecology at Stellenbosch University. When I had completed my undergraduate training, I joined Prof. Steven Chown's research group. It was here that I developed a passion for biogeography. I first did a project on the distribution patterns of organisms across Southern Ocean Islands, with a focus on nestedness patterns. Subsequently, for my Masters project, I shifted to working on body size patterns of birds across South Africa, and also compared bird assemblages in natural and agricultural landscapes. I am currently based at Aarhus University in Denmark, where I am doing a PhD on the relationship between the environment and vegetation patterns in Africa under the supervision of Jens-Christian Svenning and Anne Mette Lykke. The project is mainly bioinformatic in nature and, coming from a biological background, I find myself constantly challenged to learn new methods and approaches for analyzing my data.
